The "Gaokao" is the most important exam (考试) in China. It is a test (测试) that students take after finishing high school. The Gaokao started in 1952 and has been held every year since. This exam decides (决定) which university (大学) or college (学院) a student can go to. Many students study hard for many years to prepare (准备) for the Gaokao because it is very important for their future.
The Gaokao tests (考察) students in subjects (科目) like Chinese, math, and English. Sometimes, students also take exams in other subjects, like physics (物理) or chemistry (化学). Students usually spend months or even years getting ready (准备) for the Gaokao. It is a big event (事件) in their lives. In China, the Gaokao is so important that it is sometimes called the "gate" (大门) to a student’s future.
Preparing for the Gaokao is a tough (艰难的) journey (旅程) for students, parents (家长), and teachers (老师). Parents often encourage (鼓励) their children to study hard and help them make a good study plan (计划). Teachers give extra (额外的) lessons to help students understand (理解) everything they need for the exam.

During this time, many families feel a lot of pressure (压力) and stress (紧张), but there is also a lot of support (支持) and encouragement (鼓励). Students need to focus (专注), keep good study habits (习惯), and try their best to do well on the exam.
In China, the Gaokao lasts (持续) for two or three days. After the exam, students wait for their results (结果). The scores (分数) they get will decide which universities or colleges they can apply to (申请). Some students feel nervous (紧张), while others feel excited (兴奋). It is a time of big change (变化) for many students.
